Il Duce non si limitò soltanto a perseguitare le minoranze linguistiche e a vietare i dialetti, ma sottopose la stessa lingua di Stato a una vera e propria epurazione. Moltissimi i prestiti che furono sostituiti da termini italiani. Ad esempio lo "shock" diventò urto di nervi. Anche la forma di cortesia "Lei" fu sostituita per legge dal "Voi" e a Torino fu allestita la celeberrima Mostra Anti Lei che culminò con la censura del pronome straniero e volgare.
