Actors, including Alberto Sordi, who were performing at the Quattro Fontane (four fountains) theater on the fateful day of 23 March 1944 are in danger of being caught by the Germans. During the filming of his movie, De Sica leaves the safety of the basilica just once and is caught and questioned by a Nazi General about why the film is taking so long to be shot.

Durante le riprese de La porta del cielo, De Sica dovette affrontare dei momenti pericolosi con le truppe tedesche e riuscì a salvarsi grazie alla sua astuzia. La troupe continuava a stare al riparo nella Basilica, ma il loro comportamento era tutt'altro che consono ad un luogo sacro.

Ma trattandosi di una chiesa, la troupe cinematografica era costretta a seguire delle regole severissime e i frati avevano il compito di sorvegliare le riprese, ma spesso, poi, veniva scambiati per comparse.
