La villa, che prende il nome da un quadro raffigurante Dioniso che guarda Arianna mentre dorme, venne inizialmente scavata in età borbonica. Il nucleo più consistente comprende la sequenza dell’ingresso, il quartiere termale e l’atrio di tipo tuscanico. La struttura residenziale risale nel suo nucleo originario ad epoca tardo repubblicana, ma venne successivamente ampliata, con l’aggiunta di una serie di ambienti panoramici, nel corso del I secolo d.C.
